Updates from Able Sail - Jan 21, 2022
  • Great news from the Able Sail program going into the 2022 sailing season!
  • Through Parasport and EDI, our Lunenburg Able Sail program was awarded a grant with funding of $13,702.
  • With this funding, the program will be purchasing the following: sip and puff technology, sails, transportation, gangway transition plate, electrical cable cover and pipe receptacle. This will all assist in making the wharf access more accessible for wheelchair sailors and to help with the boarding into boats.
  • We are delighted to see the development of this wonderful program, which will meet broader needs in quadriplegic sailors.

BACKGROUND:   Since 2015, the Lunenburg Yacht Club has offered the Able Sail program for persons with physical and/or cognitive challenges. The program, governed by Able Sail Nova Scotia, is designed to be fully inclusive, and offers a range of sailing experiences – for those who just want to experience the pleasure of being out on the water, to those sailors who would like to participate and compete on an equal level with able-bodied sailors. Thanks to safe and adaptive sailing technology, even those with significant physical and/or intellectual disabilities can join the program. The LYC offers a fun, secure and supportive environment for sailors of all ages and abilities.

Our yacht club is fully accessible, providing a warm place to enjoy a meal or just watch all the activity from the shore of the beautiful waters of Princes’ Inlet. We are located approximately 5 km from both Mahone Bay and Lunenburg (exit 10, or 11 from the 103)
WHEN:   The program runs for the months of July and August. Each sailing session provides one hour on the water with a one-on-one coach, a safety boat and volunteer support to get into and out of the boat. Registration must be done in advance, and although space is limited, we do our best to create a schedule that suits the needs of all participants
LEVEL OF REQUIRED SAILING ABILITY:   The program welcomes sailors of all skill levels. Training is tailored to each individual’s needs and abilities, from beginner to advanced. No prior sailing experience is required.

WITH TRAINED INSTRUCTORS: The program is run by a group of trained and experienced volunteers who donate their time to help with coaching, getting sailors safely in and out of their boats, safety boat operation, and program coordination to assist our participants to learn and enhance their sailing skills
REGISTRATION FEES: The cost is $20 per session, along with a special LYC Able Sail annual membership fee of
$50, which gives the sailor and their principal caregiver full use of the club while on site for their sailing sessions. This includes ordering snacks or meals from our fully serviced restaurant or sitting on the deck enjoying a beverage. Registration and risk forms are available through the following contacts or the links below
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:  Are you interested in volunteering with the Able Sail Program at Lunenburg Yacht Club?  Volunteers are required in the following areas:
  • Fundraising
  • Program Administration/Scheduling
  • Boat maintenance and launch
  • Assisting participants into and out of boats
  • Safety boat operation
  • Able bodied sailors to accompany participants in the boats as volunteer coaches

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS AND DONORS
This program could not have been made possible without the support of members of the community, Canadian Paralympic Committee, National Sport Fund and Sail NS. We would especially like to recognize Elizabeth Precious, and her husband, the late Dr. David Precious, whose generous support in the early stages helped get the program started. To all the donors, professional health, wellness and recreation directors and volunteers who have been and continue to be involved with the program, we thank you.
