Jonathan Chiasson, skipper/owner of the Sonar Shananagans, accepts beer and pizza as one of the prizes for winning the Ian Kent memorial cup that was raced at LYC on Thursday July 31, 2014. He also accepted the Ian Kent Cup along with flowers.  Presenting the Pizza and Beer to Jonathan was Ian Kent's sister Judith Riddoch.  Presenting the Cup and Flowers with Judith was Ian's good friend Stuart Hebb.

This was the largest fleet that raced this summer.  This race is always a highlight of the race season.

He may look small but he would feed 125 people.  The reviews are in this has to be one of the most moist and delicious pieces of pork I have ever tried.  Thanks to Sweet Sizzle from Bridgewater for doing the Pig Roast.

Everyone is having a great time at the Hunter Rendezvous at LYC this weekend.  The winds were just great for their fun race this afternoon.  Starting at 8:30pm tonight is a dance and everyone is invited.

See you at the club!

Hey folks.  Come on out to LYC tonight and have a fantastic dinner.  The view is none better.  Lots of boats on the water tonight with the afternoon and evening sail of the Sail All program. Another great turnout for this fantastic program.

So, will we see you at LYC tonight?

Take care,

Mike

"Together wing to wing and oar to oar.”*

The sails will still be flying, and the engines growling, but an altogether different type of boat will be joining us on Prince’s Inlet this summer as LYC’s new rowing section gets going. When Morgan Knickle-Smith came to us last fall with the idea of introducing Olympic-style rowing to the club, it quickly caught fire with the board. Rowing plays to our facilities, and to our interest in building opportunities for people of all ages to have fun on the water. The fit seemed ideal. In January we met with RowNS President Peter Webster and Provincial coach Pat Cody at their office in Dartmouth and were overwhelmed by their encouragement. Besides offering to help in any way possible, Row NS will provide us with boats, at no charge, for the first two years of club operation. These range from extra stable single sculls for learn to row up to a full eight-oared shell (at about 60ft, the eight will be the club’s new king of waterline length).

Plans for the summer are firming and the first learn to row sessions should get going later this month. In July and August there will be a morning program designed for junior high and high school kids, and early morning and evening coaching will be scheduled for masters and recreational rowers. Morgan, who has years of competitive rowing experience as well as three years of coaching behind her, is our head coach and we expect to hire an assistant coach by July. The program will also rely on volunteers to help with coaching, coxing and taking care of equipment. The LYC Rowing Committee is currently just three people and we could use help. If you’re interested in joining the committee, please email Mike Smith. Details will be on the web site soon.

Rowing offers an ideal combination of fitness and camaraderie. Can you imagine a better motivation for sticking to your fitness goals than being part of a crew, or a more inviting gym than Prince’s Inlet on a calm summer evening? Please consider LYC Rowing in your summer plans.

Phil
