LYC Sailfest 2021 Wrap-up! |
The 2021 edition of the Lunenburg Yacht Club Sailfest, with 121 junior sailors from seven clubs across Nova Scotia taking part, wrapped up on Friday afternoon.
Principal Race Officer Lesley Taylor and her team of volunteers ran six races among the islands of Mahone Bay over the course of two days for the 95 boat fleet. Despite challenging weather conditions, even the torrential rains and gusts of up to 25 knots didn’t deter the young sailors or the Bluenose II from making an appearance.
In the 44 boat Opti fleet, it was Kai Luther (RNSYS) who took first place, just one point ahead of Baruch Saffer (RNSYS) and Ryan Santimaw (CYC) who were second and third respectively.
It was also close racing among the fleet of 23 C420s where sailors from the Lunenburg Yacht Club filled the podium. Coached by Sophie Carter and Maddie Chaisson, the duos from LYC took all three podium places with Hudson Amery/Ashlyn Meisner winning overall, Charlie Barbara/Madelyn Green in second place and Hailey Nichols/Kat Lowe in third.
Jasper Waldman (CYC) topped the six boat Laser Radial class, while Lilly Rainham (RNSYS) was first in the Laser 4.7s.
The Opti green fleet raced on Thursday in Prince’s Inlet, where Sam Barbara (LYC) managed the race course and ran five races for the 17 Opti sailors.
“It was great to welcome junior sailors, coaches and parents from across Nova Scotia back to to Lunenburg Yacht Club this year for Sailfest. We had ideal conditions on day one and day two really put the young sailors to the test, when even the rain and strong winds didn’t dampen their spirits. We ran a slightly scaled down version of Sailfest this year, but are already optimistic that we will be able to host even more sailors in 2022,” said Rob Barbara, Director of the LYC Learn to Sail program.
LYC extends sincere thanks to the event sponsors Mahone Marine, TD Bank and West Nova Fuels, who together with the LYC volunteers make these unique events happen.
