LYC Sailfest 2022 Wrap-up! |
SailFest 2022, hosted by Lunenburg Yacht Club, took place on 28-29 July with close to 140 participants enjoying one of the best race areas in the province and the club’s south shore hospitality.
LYC sailors Hudson Amery and Ashlyn Meisner were first in the competitive 420 fleet of 26 boats. In second place, it was Maggie Fitzgerald and Matt Gentleman of Hubbards Sailing Club, while Aislin Martin and Mattias Leslie of RNSYS finished third.
The largest fleet was the Open Opti class, with 47 young sailors taking part. It was the RNSYS sailors who filled the podium with William Kielty of Kingston (ON) in first place, Tia Kinnear in second and Jacob JingBo in third.
The SailFest green fleet included 28 up and coming Opti sailors, as well as four 420s.
The class winners were excited to take home the traditional (and practical) skate boards, handmade in Lahave by Homegrown Skateboards with limited edition Canada SailGP team caps.
As part of the Club’s commitment to reducing the use of single use plastic and ocean stewardship, SailFest 2022 was registered as a Sailors for the Sea Clean Regatta and obtained silver certification. A shout out to the sailors from the Opti fleet and LYC volunteers who took part in the clean up in support of SailGP Team’s ambitious goal to clean up 10% of Canada’s coastline together with Ocean Wise.
The LYC SailFest could not take place without the continued support of so many volunteers who help make everything happen on and off the water, under the guidance of long serving Regatta Director Rob Barbara and Shoreside Coordinator, Robin Thorsteinson.
LYC is also grateful for the ongoing support of event partners Mahone Marine and West Nova Fuels.
Mark your calendars now for 2023 SailFest on 27-28 July. We hope to see you there!
